Community Assistance for Seniors
When the coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic became widespread in mid-March, Florida Power & Light Company acted quickly to implement special policies in support of our customers and the communities we serve. Since that time, we’ve never stopped working to develop new ways to support customers, from accelerating fuel savings into a single month’s bill in May to offering direct relief to customers, including those significantly past due on their account.
That’s why I’m pleased to share that FPL recently announced our plan to expand our COVID-19 relief effort by offering bill credits to eligible low-income customers through a supplemental assistance program.
Residential customers who receive federal assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) or the Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP) will receive an automatic $20 credit on their monthly FPL bill starting in December that will extend through December 2021.
FPL understands that we need to provide relief to as many customers as possible, especially those who are most vulnerable. In addition to waiving certain fees and policies, FPL, its fellow NextEra Energy companies and employees have so far committed nearly $5 million in COVID-19 emergency assistance funds. These donations are being distributed directly to those in need and to partner organizations working on the frontlines of the crisis to provide critical support to the most vulnerable members of the communities we serve. This new program is an extension of that assistance.
